Historia y Arqueologia Marítima

ABOUT HISTARMAR

This website was created in February 2003, with the intention of informing about Maritime History and Archaeology in Spanish, mainly about  subjects related to the spanish speaking world. So I apologize to english readers; I can translate a specific subject if you so request, in other languages I am sorry not be be able to do this.

It´s purpose is to be a base for research in spanish, but also as a place where historians, archaeologists and enthusiasts of the Maritime lore can collaborate with each other.

We also want to work on the identification, search and preservation of the objects that concern our maritime past, be it in the form of photographs, drawings, plans, articles, books, oral history, family records and keepsakes, etc, therefore we invite our visitors to help us by sending any and all of the above, as long as they are related to our subject, be from true sources and can be checked for accuracy. We do our best to be accurate and true in the data we publish, though personal records and memoirs go as they are.

We will try as well to include all national and international news about maritime archaeology, translated into spanish as far as possible.

We invite all of you which are interested in receiving our newsletter - called HyAM News - to send us a short message asking to be included with your name, e-mail address and city/country and we will include you in our list, which is not published anywhere nor is it put in the messages. Nothing is automatic, all is done manually so it´s not so important how or what you put in the text, I will try to understand it.

We also have started recently a Maritime History Club, where members can freely discuss this topic and interchange information, we have already an agreement with the Stichting Maritiem-Historische Databank from Holland, a club similar to ours. We invite other people and organizations to join us in our group, just send us and e-mail requesting specially this. There is also a very popular Yahoo Forum if Histarmar, it is not open to anyone, but please send me a request and I will certainly consider it, you must understand spanish, though.

The creator and webmaster of the site is me, Carlos Mey, but the website has now it´s own life with a large number of helpers who offer their time, knowledge and archives for it to be something complete, from which anyone can use and share information, of course freely. This is not a commercial site!

We have had a great help from the Promare US foundation from the USA, who in 2004 and again in 2006 gave us a grant which helped to renew hardware and software for the site and start a series on research trips into the Argentine river ports. Thanks so much, Gregg Cook and Brett Phaneuf!

Just one thing more: we do not search for relatives, officers, sailors, or anything that has to do with genealogy or short romances on board! (Yes, we do have a lot of such questions!)

Best regards,

Carlos (Charlie) Mey
