NEWS :: HMS SIDON SALVAGE Dorset based Deepquest Sub Sea has announced its intentions to embark on a unique submarine salvage attempt. The Sidon project aims to unite various marine and salvage equipment manufacturers and is inviting interested companies to test their specialist knowledge and equipment on the site of the S Class submarine.
It is hoped that participants can conduct research and development in their own chosen technology, whilst aiding the attempt to raise HMS Sidon. The project should provide an opportunity to demonstrate pioneering techniques in submarine rescue, salvage and training in a natural environment. HMS Sidon was a British S Class Submarine built by Cammell Laird & Co Limited, Birkenhead and launched in September 1944. During torpedo test firing trials in 1955 the Sidon was sunk after one of the Mk 12 torpedoes equipped with an HTP (high test peroxide) motor exploded in her No. 3 torpedo tube. Although most of the crew escaped, 13 men were killed in the sinking. SIDON was towed to a causeway on Chesil Beach where the bodies of the crew members were removed to be buried in the naval cemetery that overlooks Portland Harbour and Weymouth Bay. |

A board of inquiry attached no blame for the disaster to her commander Lt Cmdr Verry. The accident signalled the end of the Mk 12 programme and the end of research into HTP fuelled torpedoes. On 14 June 1957 HMS Sidon was deliberately scuttled for use as an asdic target 15 miles off Portland Bill in Lyme Bay. She now lies at a depth of 34 metres and is classed as a distressed submarine, not a wreck. |
